Person killed, another injured in shooting on campus of East Oakland adult education center

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A person was killed and another was injured in a shooting on an East Oakland school campus Friday morning, according to police.

The shooting happened just before 9 a.m. at the Parker Community Resource Center, which shares space with the Roots Community Center.

Police say when officers arrived on scene, they found two victims in their 20s suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered aid, but one of the victims succumbed to their injuries while the other was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

SKY7 was over the scene, which showed dozens of evidence markers near a classroom not attached to the main building and a yellow tarp over a body.

Oakland Police Chief James Beere said in an afternoon news conference that this was not a random act of violence and, after talking to the family, they have some good leads. Chief Beere said he's fairly confident they will be able to identify the people responsible and determine a motive.

The resource center is operated by the Oakland Unified School District. Spokesperson John Sasaki said the campus was immediately locked down after the shooting. About 20 people were on campus at the time of the incident, he said.

"We are all devastated," said Sasaki. "This is something that should have never happened here or anywhere else."

Sasaki said the district is working with the victim's family to support them and assisting Oakland police in their investigation.

At this time, no arrests have been made.

The Parker Community Resource Center and OUSD are devastated by the incident that happened on Friday morning. Our schools are oases where students feel safe and supported, and that goes for our students in adult education, as well. Immediately after the incident, the campus was locked down, and everyone else was secured safely inside classrooms and our front office. This kind of tragedy should never happen anywhere, especially not on a school campus. We are working to give the students and staff who were on the campus at the time the support they need, and that will continue in the coming days.
